The Hackney Social Centre was evicted May 16, 2008, after two unsuccessful eviction attempts in April. Many of the people living at the Social Centre have returned to their countries, and many are still in London, involved in different projects. The Social Centre was a brief but valuable experiment in active resistance and active defense of a large autonomous space in Hackney.

The Hackney space has a little bit of money left from the vegan cafes and from donations from the different groups that hosted events in the building. All of this money is going to fund direct action activies in London and abroad. Last month, £300 was given to comrades in Vancouver, organizing militant direct action resistance to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. In Hackney, squats and low-income housing are directly threatened by the Olympic re-development plans. The militancy of the Canadian activists is....inspirational.
URGENT UPDATE! The Hackney Social Centre is still under **THREAT OF EVICTION!** In March, the building's owners were given a Warrant of Possession by the courts. The Social Centre's scheduled eviction was successfully resisted on Monday 21 April by over 60 people - both inside and outside the building. Bailiffs are now expected to return to the building at any time.

Dear High Court Bailiffs,

Where were you? We waited for you, and were most sorely disappointed to discover that you, our most important guests, decided not to come to the party organized in your honour! Here's a taste of what you missed:

As I write this I cannot help but anticipate reactions in the form of ‘What the hell ...’, ‘Who does he think he is ...’, ‘Just another bloody ...’, and ‘He hasn’t got a clue ...’, but please take the time to consider the following.

I am sure you give thought to whatever you do before you actually do it, but it is essential (not for the likes of me, but for you) that you come to a complete stop to do the thinking. You must try to see all that you do through the eyes of the many different types of people who see and hear you, allowing the time to balance feelings with the possible consequences of failing to express them effectively.
I suspect there are more people out there who are closer to sympathising with you than you would imagine, but their understanding and potential support needs to be drawn gently to the surface before most of them will even hint at a willingness to stand beside you. How do I know this? Because I am one of them.

I heard about the HSC from someone who saw it when in London, and who did a good job of making a few cracks in my preconceived ideas. The result was that weeks later, while sitting at the computer, I vaguely remembered that conversation and decided to see what Google could turn up for me.
Having arrived at your site, my interest was at once overruled by the impact of words on one of the banners.
‘Don’t close it’ – great.
‘Does London need more yuppie flats?’ – no way; at least not until all other needs have been catered for.
‘We make spaces free from oppression and hierarchy’ – sounds like good sense.

But ‘Squat the World’? I think I know what you mean, but this speaks to those in the same situations as yourselves. It is a cry of solidarity when I believe you should be aiming your words at the rest of us. Just think, if only one in every thousand of us got as far as I have in thinking about what is going on, you would have thousands of people on the verge of giving some sort of support; and many would appear to be the very sorts from whom you might expect little sympathy, and those whom the authorities would not automatically tend to view with suspicion. That could be the beginning of something.

And then the real turn-off. ‘F... THE LAW’
As with ‘Squat the world’, a part of me (a very small part) thinks it has some idea of what you mean, but I even hesitate to admit that.
It is there in big red letters for all to see, and what does it really say to 99% of all who read it? It tells them that whatever is going on over there is probably illegal, and those involved don’t give a damn about anyone or anything except themselves. That vast majority take their offended sensibilities elsewhere, and any potential for the wider acceptance and promotion of your cause is lost for good.
Even though I am attempting to show a tentative support for you by writing this, my interest has receded further back into the shadows. I am sure I am not the only one, and we are of no earthly use to you or your cause where you have sent us.

Come on! You deserve so much better than this.

Phil

Hackney's on Lake has a long history of hosting successful parties. Since the 1960's, it began to be the first of a lot of numerous expansions, it has played host to many fine events. The center says "We want everyone, including you, to enjoy themselves. That is the simple reason behind our success".

let us reopen this space and our hearts, we've been in but we need more solidarity people not envious power relations when social centres come and go...
this place might be on the west-end-media-labelled "murder mile" but we could celebrate the centenary year of both the famous cinema (google down histories: from kenning hall to palace pavilion) and the ballroom that witnessed two world wars. why should they stay empty when people have ideas for the community? why do estate agents let it rot away? why should it become property roulette to cash in with the olympics? will it be demolished for a fancy roundabout hotel?
no time for suffocation, let us enter and rebuild once again for good...
peace, love & unity against intimidation, oppression and suicide of greed!

Technologies is continuously evolving, and it looks that there is a new software launched every single working day that is meant to simplify undertaking organization. This can be frustrating if you do not stay current on the high-degree traits of technological innovation and their corresponding effect on organization
